A Generous Dose of the Best Medicine
By Sue Dickinson

I was really sick this week. It started out innocently enough with a dry cough, the kind where you pop in a cough drop and forget about it. Then, I flew on Monday. I knew I was in trouble when it felt like I was being shot through the ears with a Star Trek laser beam during the plane’s descent into Dallas. It took every ounce of my power to keep from seriously wounding the two innocent business men on either side of me as I fought to deal with the pain in my ears. Shortly thereafter, the head cold from hell appeared and made the entire trip miserable. Mercifully, I got my work done, but the long, quiet evenings of “me” time I had looked forward to disappeared. Instead, each night I returned to the hotel, called home, took drugs (over the counter), and collapsed.

The only good part was that a nice man from room service came every night and brought me dinner. I looked forward to his smile and special care as he laid out the eggs, chicken soup, and other comfort food. But it was a sad replacement for the cinnamon toast with the crusts cut off that my Mommy used to make me when I was sick as a little girl. I really missed the TLC. Probably because I wasn’t in my home, it was especially sad not to have the extra love and attention I used to get when I was young.

Shortly after I returned home, my son caught my cold. He came into my bedroom early one morning in tears and all stuffed up. When I felt him, it was obvious he was burning up with fever. Remembering how I longed for a little special handling while I was sick, I’m afraid I literally showered him with tender loving care. We cuddled and watched videos. We napped together (I was easily persuaded as I was still recuperating myself). And yes, I even made him cinnamon toast with the crusts cut off.

And you know what? The cold from hell that took me seven days to recover from traveled through his system in a day and a half. By the end of day two he was bouncing off the walls, dying to get back to his normal routine (I’m a little ashamed to admit it but I was dying for him to get back to his normal routine, too). Now, I know kids are resilient. They bounce back quickly, and react to medicine more readily than adults. But, I’m convinced. There is definitely something very therapeutic in a generous dose of TLC. A Mommy’s love makes all the difference. Now, if I could just find a way to get MY mommy to come back and pamper ME the next time I catch a cold—and it would definitely be cheaper than the room service guy!
